There is fear of the wilderness. From the moment he Goodman Brown enters the forres, he voices his fear of the wilderness, the forrest is the place of the dark and unknown. This reflects the Puritan fear of the "savage" New World. Puritans felt Indians could attack or the Devil resides in the dark shadows of the forrest.
