Wang Scholar takes on Young Fu as a student, without recompense, and teaches him to read and write and to respect the classics. It is important to realize that very few Chinese, at the time of this story, knew how to read and write; the Chinese written language, with its ideographs and complicated strokes, required long and intensive study. Still, although only a small percentage of the population was literate, all people held scholars and teachers in the highest esteem, and no profession evoked greater respect and admiration than that of scholar-teacher.
