How does Young Fu's relationship with Tang change over the course of the novel, Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze?

Tang begins as Young Fu's mentor... his teacher. Over the course of the novel, the two develop a father/ son relationship, which is made legal in the story's ending through Tang's formal adoption of Young Fu.
