Mr. K is a fatherly figure towards Liz who helps her nurture her confidence as a musician and encourages her not to give up on her dream of attending Pennington. When he is able to inform Liz that she has been granted a make-up audition, he cries with joy for her as well. Mr. K is also one of the few adults in the novel who is accepting of Liz and Amanda’s relationship from the outset, providing a strong foundation of trust.
