Band practice symbolizes catharsis. Band practice offers Liz a place where she can be completely understood by Mr. K. At the end of the novel, she is able to let go of any self-consciousness about her race or sexual orientation crime and her relationship mistakes even as they cause pain at the beginning. Music and the community of the band provides both comfort and challenges for Liz.
