The first five chapters provide exposition about Grace’s life with Jonathan in New York though the facts shared in this exposition are not necessarily trustworthy. The action begins to rise at the moment that Malaga arrives late to the planning meeting for the fund-raiser and points out that just like Henry, Elena has long eyelashes. The action continues to rise as the reader realizes that Grace does not really know Jonathan as well as she thinks she does. The reader realizes this long before Grace ever becomes completely aware of the reality of what had happened.
