Gold, as a color and a metal, is representative of Feyi’s inherent value and self-worth. This is shown in the gold braids Feyi chooses for her trip with Nasir at Joy’s encouragement, which are associated with wealth. Joy tells Feyi that she looks “expensive” (64) and also urges her to not feel beholden to Nasir due to his generosity, implying that Feyi deserves to be treated well without being obligated to give anything in return.
