Why does Ben decide to run for Student Council treasurer in the novel, You Go First?

For Ben, the Student Council represents stability. He firmly believes that if he wins the treasurer spot that he will be happy. This is why he chooses to run in the middle of his parent’s divorce. He feels he cannot control what he calls a devolution of his family, so he tries to find his own comfort in the Student Council. Unfortunately for Ben, it is heavily implied that he will not win the vote after the firecracker incident. However, this does show him that the Student Council is not the source of stability he needs.
