The school district in which Reardan was located had been 99% white, and Alexis was one of the few Indians attending the school. It is here that Alexie found joy through his new friends, teammates and popularity. On the first day of freshman year, Alexie was unanimously elected class president, and he was later captain of the basketball team, prom royalty and president of the Future Farmers of America. His overwhelming acceptance was likely due to his ability to excel in "everything that a Reardan kind was supposed to be good at" (221).
