In Chapter One, Paley outlines the problem. The phrase "You can't play" is the beginning of the formation of a social hierarchy, and makes some children feel awful about themselves and sometimes leaves them isolated. This foreshadows the themes in the narrative of teaching compassion and empathy to kids.
