The Coast to Coast walk is symbolic of personal growth. The walk compels the characters to take physical action and to break out of their insular realities. The longer they walk, the more emotionally and psychologically open to change they feel. Over the course of the adventure, Marnie and Michael rediscover themselves via communion with the natural world and heartfelt conversation with each other.
