Why does Joe mix peanut oil in Benji's coffee in the novel, You?

Even though Benji has told Joe that he is allergic to nuts, Joe acts as if he is not sure if he should believe him or not. He mixes this peanut oil into Benji’s coffee, and then he pretends to be surprised when he finds Benji dead.
