The phone that Joe steals from Beck is a symbol of his obsession. He uses the phone to read Beck’s e-mails. Beck prefers that mode of conversation over texting, so Joe is able to learn all the details of Beck’s plans with her friends and her discussions with them about him. He also eavesdrops on Beck’s conversations with other men.
