How does the author use foreshadowing in the novel, You’ve Reached Sam?

The winged bookend that Sam found at the antique store came in a pair. He was only able to afford one bookend at a time, but the second piece of the pair had already been purchased by the time he went back. Although the bookends became an inside joke between the couple, the items can be seen as a foreshadowing for the division of life and death that would separate Sam and Julie.
