Photos are representative of limited or controlled truths. Jayne is initially intimidated by Patrick due to the appearance of his Instagram page, which reflects an attractive, desirable profile of someone who has maintained career success. However, she also adjusts the appearance of her own page before following Patrick on the site, showing an awareness of how presentation can alter perception: “I tidy it up. So it’s more aesthetic” (39). Jayne also successfully uses her sister’s ID to buy drinks while underage, which suggests that identity, presented through names and images, is flexible and malleable, but also powerful.
