Social media, along with dating sites like Tinder, are representative of disposability and sameness. While scrolling through Tinder, Jayne remarks on how easy it is to reject or ignore people through the app: “It’s dazzling how disposable we all are” (41). On Instagram, she disposes of pictures on her profile, imagining that Patrick might look at it. This suggests that she sees a stripped-down version of herself as being preferable to a full one, and implies that social media encourages reduction of people’s imperfect personalities in favor of a smooth, uniform presentation.
