What is the importance of the "teen room" in the novel, Yes No Maybe So?

The teen room is a symbol of the idea that even if you are too young to vote, you are not too young to make a difference, and make change. It also resonates with the theme of politics is personal. Sophie first asks her Mom for the teen room in Chapter One, and everyone in Jamie’s family thinks it is an excuse for the teenagers to do inappropriate things without adult supervision. Sophie keeps pushing the issue until she finally gets this room at her bat mitzvah. The day after her bat mitzvah, Sophie gives Jamie a stack of postcards, all filled out to Representative Holden expressing opposition to H.B. 28. This shows the young adult reader that they can both be teenagers, and do teenage things, but also be activists that make their voices heard.
