Who is Mrs. Helen Bradford from Year of Wonders and what is their importance?

Mrs. Bradford suffers an abusive marriage with her husband Colonel Henry Bradford. Her son is a drunken jerk. Her only salvation is her relationship with her daughter Elizabeth. Another man impregnates her and Henry’s doctor is instructed to let both her and the baby die. She ironically survives the plague.
