Why is Malcolm put into solitary confinement in the book, X: A Novel?

When Malcolm sees the body of a fellow prisoner who hanged himself and is reminded of the lynched man he saw en route to Boston, he becomes angry and is sent to solitary confinement for throwing food and causing a disturbance.
