Sophia is the white woman that Malcolm dates throughout most of the novel. They meet at the Roseland Ballroom, shortly after Malcolm has arrived in Boston, and continue seeing each other even after Sophia is married. She is described as "Stunning," (153) with blond hair and blood red lips, she is "like a scoop of molten vanilla" (157). Malcolm is attracted to her flirtatious attitude, her convertible car, and of course, the allure of dating a white woman. Their relationship is on-again-off-again, they take a notable period of distance after they are harassed by racists on the harbor and Sophia is spit upon. At the end of the novel, Sophia suggests Malcolm and Shorty help her rob some houses in the suburbs, and when they are caught, she turns on Malcolm and testifies against him. In court, she declares herself innocent, a confused pawn used by the two black men, when in fact the robberies were her idea. Malcolm is shocked at her reversal.
