Bambry calms Malcolm down when he has an outburst while manufacturing license plates in prison. Malcolm appreciates Bembry because there is a "stillness, a calm, that he emanates" (329) and begins reading and educating himself at Bembry's suggestion. When Bembry gives him a book by W.E.B. Du Bois, Malcolm's interest in black empowerment is rekindled for the first time since childhood.
