What leads to Catherine and Heathcliff's disappearance in Chapter 6?

One night Catherine and Heathcliff disappear entirely; Heathcliff returns alone. Catherine has stayed at Thrushcross Grange to recover from being bitten by one of the dogs on the property, but Heathcliff was not asked to stay.
