Life with the newlyweds at Thrushcross Grange is good; Edgar and Isabella bend to every wish of Catherine's. After a three-year absence, Heathcliff returns clean, well-dressed, handsome, and well-spoken. Catherine invites Heathcliff inside, and Edgar does his best to appear civil when Heathcliff speaks to his wife as though she is his intimate.
