Why does John approach Casey away from his table when his family goes to brunch at Iris in Chapter 15?

Oscar Kolton's young son John approaches Casey when she is away from the table in order to give her money and explain that he wants to pay for his dad's birthday brunch. Casey takes the money and tells John she will not bring the tab to the table. Later, it turns out to be quite short of the bill.
