Why does Casey live where she lives? How did she get there?

Casey does not know why she returned to Cambridge other than feeling she had nowhere else to go. She had left for Spain to live with a lover, then when the relationship ended she returned to the states. After her mother's death, she lived briefly in Bend, Oregon, with her brother, then attended a writer's retreat, and then came back to Cambridge.
