Why does Caleb come to Cambridge in Chapter 45?

Caleb comes to Cambridge to bring Casey their mother's car. He also brings her ashes for them to distribute by Horseshoe Beach, where their mother took them as children. As an ulterior motive, Caleb seems to be testing out the waters with Adam, with whom he was once involved.
