Silas's short story Star of Ashtabula symbolizes internal peace. When Casey happens upon the piece, she realizes it is the first thing she has been able to read in weeks. She thieves the story from Oscar's house, and reads it every night before bed. Later she realizes the story's main character reminds her of her mother, and therefore grants her a sense of stillness, a reprieve from her emotional unrest.
