What happens after the reading in Chapter 38?

Casey goes home with Oscar. His sons are with his mother and she spends the night. They consummate their relationship, although it comes across as passionless to Casey. Unable to sleep after Oscar passes out, Casey goes downstairs, finds a manuscript by Silas, and begins reading it.
