Bees appear on numerous occasions in the book. They connect to Luke's character, who wrote many poems about bees and took Casey to a friend's bee farm in the Berkshires. Casey also associates bees with her feelings of anxiety. When she feels anxious, she feels as though bees are buzzing in her chest.
