The author uses imagery of bees to represent Casey's fear and anxiety. At the start of the novel, Casey tells Luke she hates bees. In the sections to follow, Casey begins referring to her internal unrest as bees. When she senses this buzzing inside of her, the reader knows Casey is experiencing significant emotional turmoil. The bees finally go silent once Casey confronts her past and makes peace with her hurt.
