Palmer finally becomes old enough to read the inscription on his father's trophy in the den. What did he pretend it said when he was younger? What does it really say? How does Palmer respond to learning what the words actually are?

Palmer made up the inscription "In honor of all pigeons. This house loves you." When he is finally able to read, he sees the trophy reads "Sharpshooter Award Pigeon Day 1998." It is then that he realizes his father is a shooter in the pigeon shoot. Palmer also knows then that he does not want to be a wringer.
