Palmer thinks of wandering away, but Beans and Mutto are nearby. As he waits in line, Palmer thinks about his first pigeon shoot, the sounds and smells and feelings he associates with a pigeon shoot now. He is momentarily worried the wringmaster will notice his anxiety and send him away, humiliated, in front of his friends. Instead, Palmer takes the mock-pigeon sock in his hands, wrings it, throws it to the ground and walks away.
