Dorothy asks Palmer if she is going to be invited to his birthday party this year. It is here that the narrator makes it clear that Palmer considers Dorothy his best friend and confidante. Even so, he cannot invite her to his party because he wants to stay in good graces with the boys in the gang. Palmer realizes that he is now afraid of the very boys with who he so wanted to be friends. The world of Nipper, Dorothy and his family comes into direct conflict with that of Beans, Mutto and Henry.
