What are some of Palmer's memories of his first pigeon shoot? What does this tell us about Palmer?

Palmer remembers the fluttering of the feathers after the birds are shot; a man cheering and spitting barbecued chicken; the smell of gun smoke; the injured pigeon coming close to him and the wringer killing the pigeon in front of him. Palmer increasingly appears to be a sensitive and caring child who does not understand the cruelty displayed by the people of the town.
