Palmer knows a lot about pigeons. What kinds of things does he know about releasing a pigeon so the bird will not be able to return home? How does he use this information with Nipper?

Palmer knows that in order to ensure a pigeon is not able to return to his home, one must bring the pigeon as far away from its home as possible, and then disorient him. In order to ensure Nipper is safely away from town and the gang, Palmer and Dorothy take a long bike ride out of town to a meadow. In the meadow, Palmer rides in circles and figure eights in order to disorient Nipper, then brings him deep into a forest to drop him off.
