At first, he wants the bird to leave and tells him so. Then he feeds the pigeon knowing the bird will keep coming back for more food. He watches the bird eat and notices small details about the pigeon. During school he is thinking about the pigeon as "his bird" and this worries him. When he comes home, Palmer feels disappointed that the pigeon is not there, but simultaneously feels good that the gang will not see him with a pigeon. Finally, when the pigeon returns in the late afternoon, Palmer is excited to see the bird and allows it to come into his bedroom.
