The tension Palmer has felt for months protecting Nipper has left him. The gang ceases their endless harassment, and Palmer rarely sees Dorothy. He has gone from having his gang, his friend and his pet to having no one. Palmer spends time with his father playing with his soldiers and going to a baseball game. Palmer stops reading his Beetle Bailey cartoon strip, and even stops reading books.
