The novel is written in third person from several perspectives, focusing on different characters at different times. The main characters for the focus are Merthin, Caris, Gwenda, Ralph, and Godwyn, and the majority of the events in the novel are explained from their perspectives. The varying perspective is necessary because of the sheer scope of the novel, spanning several decades and set in several specific places. No single character is present for all the events or appears in all the countries. For example, Merthin spends some time in Italy before choosing to return to England. Caris and Ralph are in France at the same time but they see the battles from very different points of view and come away with very different experiences. Godwyn is the only one who can detail the conversations and plans that take place between him and Petranilla as well as describing how he implements those plans.
