The bridge is the main passage into Kingsbridge and is symbolic of the town's prosperity. As the novel opens, the bridge is narrow and tradesmen have to wait hours to enter the city. After the collapse, the citizens build a wider bridge that is more accommodating and stable, just as the city is becoming more stable when Caris comes up with a new way of earning money.
