Sam, the son of Gwenda and Ralph, becomes a symbol of a sexual encounter Ralph and Gwenda had. Gwenda exploits that relationship to get Ralph to spare Sam from being hanged for murder. Ralph exploits it by threatening to tell Wulfric the truth. That relationship becomes more symbolic when Sam kills Ralph without learning the truth.
