Who is Vasalisa from Women Who Run with the Wolves and what is their importance?

Vasalisa is a young girl from one of the earlier stories. She is the one who is sent to Baba Yaga and instead of failing and dying as the step family had planned, she makes it all the way there and receives initiation. She suffers. She represents the hard childhood in contrast to the easy, idyllic one.
