Molotschna Colony is the all-encompassing setting for the novel's narrative events. The colony is an isolated community in an unidentified location. Because the women at the center of the narrative have no knowledge of the world outside their colony, Molotschna's surrounding context remains unidentified. The colony, however, is comprised of many homes, barns, and fields. Its members subsist on the work of their own hands. Only the Molotschna men have interactions with those tourist and neighboring persons beyond it.
