Why does Katherine love her room at the hotel in the novel, Women’s Hotel?

Katherine delights in her room because all she "want[s] [is] a comfortable room that [is] easy to keep clean, reasonable conveniences, a plausible excuse not to entertain from home when she [cannot] afford it, and to not have to do the washing up herself" (33).
