Who or what does J.D. rely on for comfort and companionship in the novel, Women’s Hotel?

Because J.D. is almost entirely estranged from her family, she comes to rely on her stray cat for a sense of comfort. This is why she is so distressed when the cat goes missing at the novel's end. Losing the cat means losing friendship.
