When Mrs. Mossler can afford to serve the meal, the Biedermeier girls feel comfortable and at ease. When she can no longer afford to serve the meal, the residents experience a sense of scarcity. Without this included meal, they must either go without food, spend money they do not have, or steal food and money from others.
