How does Josephine survive financially in the novel, Women’s Hotel?

Josephine cannot work because of her age, and thus, she cannot support herself. Instead of changing her living situation and moving into a home as her sister suggests, however, she takes to stealing money when she is out. Her pickpocketing habit helps her to survive.
