One of the most prominent photographs in the novel, that of Michael, Tom, and the other soldiers in a field, makes the soldiers "all very happy" to see, though Michael feels a "fierce terrible loneliness" (235) in taking it, as he realizes the idealization of the moment does not reflect reality.
