The American flag is a symbol for the American dream as a whole, specifically as it applies to veterans of the Civil War hoping to move on from the violence to a more peaceful existence. In the flags first appearance, it "hangs a flaccid tangle of stars and stripes" and "requires a stronger breeze to make it snap out proud" (18). This reluctance to fly proudly reflects the difficulty of many veterans in believing in the American dream after the war. Michael still feels stirrings of emotion on seeing the flag fly even after going to war, highlighting Michael's continuing belief in the American dream and the possibility for a better life for him and his brother.
