"The Bridge" at the start of the game Trace Italian is the place where each player begins his or her individual journey. "The Bridge" serves as a metaphor for the beginning of that journey - specifically, the inciting incident in the novel that causes him to start on his journey inward ... the potential lawsuit brought against him by the parents of someone who lost her life while playing Trace Italian.
