Who is Toby in the novel, Wolf Hollow?

Formerly a carpenter from Maryland, Toby is a World War I veteran and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who, decades later, still struggles with the horrors he experienced in combat in Europe. It has left him a hollow, broken, and lonely man. He carries around three rifles as a symbolic manifestation of the weight of his pain and experience from the war. Slowly, over time, Toby becomes friends with Annabelle and her family, but it is with Annabelle that Toby becomes especially close.
